Days 9, 10, and 11

day9

found me trying to write but we were also getting things down for finding a new home so I was only able to write one poem

but day 10

overnight I found I was writing in the middle of the night more connected to what the idea of Trance Poetics would be I'm tapping into something and I still need to read over it to see if it's good or not but I was able to write about three poems for poems today after I woke up I couldn't sleep so then I went down and wrote a couple more poems I'm enjoying just having the time off so that I don't feel the big pressure about writing but I can really try something experimental to without having all of the teaching that usually comes with it which really takes a lot of my creativity and energy

Day 11

I am copying over the poems I wrote into my messenger. Also, figuring out how to get to Gage Park for some writing.

Another poem comes as I'm mowing the yard. This is often not how poems come to me but without needing to teach I am taking this with fun and happiness.

Day 8

We are applying for a home loan! Lots happened last weekend, and we are putting a bid on a HUD house close to Washburn. I am working on the loan through Envista. However, when I tried online I had a system error. I will need to go in this afternoon to complete paperwork.

Also, listening to the correct recordings from the Little House (LH) trip.

Finally, it hit me: the two books I am carrying around are ekphrastic poetry.

Diane Seuss' Still Life with Two Dead Peacocks and a Girl
Lyn Melnick's Landscape with Sex and Violence

I also thought of a new series: Predators of Kansas.

My Google search returned these things (see below).

Things to do:
I should really send poems out soon.
As I had to cancel with Barbara because of the loan, to go to Gage Park for writing. It is rainy today, though.

I have a lot in the LH essay that needs editing. That will be the pain, but I know voice to text is the best way for me to get writing done. It will be a twenty page essay.

Day 7

Friday afternoon fell apart with the need to get home.

As I am waiting for the van to get checked, I am at work at Starbucks getting things done.

Before, I met with Cally Krallman today for a collaboration--an ekphrastic project. I emailed her with possible times to pick up her paitnings, leave her my books, and shared prairie poetry with her.

I worked on three poems: one on one of her pantings "A Walk in the Park," and two on the Our 1990's project.

I updated the Psychology of Poetics document. Requested three Gary Lachman books via interlibrary loan.

I (sadly) watched Hollow Man for my Venom and Predator essay. Took more notes for the essay, to relive what I must have watched for my birthday in 2000.

For Woodley, I finalized editing Andres Rodriguez's book and ordered copies.

I worked a little on the LH essay, leading to the Independence, Kansas section.

Need to do:

I had the wrong recordings, so I will need to listen to recordings of my discussions for LH.

Work on the VatP essay during these releases:
September 14: The Predator is released
October 5: Venom is released

Days 5 and 6

Yesterday, I laid out what is a second poem to the Our 1990s series.

This morning, I worked three hours on the Little House essay which grows larger by the moment. So much to include, but I went through a couple of books to add some of the details and research. I am using a Sarah Smarsh approach to story telling, not citing per se, but including as books I have consulted at the end of the essay.

This afternoon, I will listen to recordings of my discussions for LH, and watch Hollow Man for my Venom and Predator essay.

Days 3 and 4

After meeting with Barbara yesterday we decided to meet at Gage Park this coming Tuesday. We are going to do a Plein Air and sit together near the pond by the Rose Garden. She's going to take sketches and I'm going to do the immersion writing with a women centered approach drawing on archetypes in Mythos. I have noticed something happening every morning I wake up which is I'm inspired to write a few lines down which lead to a poem. I am writing a series of 1990s poems beginning with a response to one of Kevin's poems. Today I wrote my second one. As part of this I will need to free watch the movie singles.

Day 2

I am putting the Psych of Poetics on hold for now. I will need to approach it with several implementation steps:

  • syllabus
  • semester plan day by day
  • pdf scans at office

I will need to add Ronda's visit, plans for the film, workshop discussions, etc. I emailed her today.

I also emailed MMLA of the panels I will be coordinating.

I worked on Little House, the Venom and the Predator essay, and look at pulling together Beyond. I will need to go through my notes from my journal to type them up.

Part of the Venom essay depended on revisting Hollow Man (2000) which I found on Vudu.

Baseball and Vietnam War Film Posters

https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/all-time-best-baseball-films

1) Like in Apocalypse Now, my father has orders to go deep into the jungle to take out a strung out Marlon Brando.

2) Like in Platoon, my father is just another soldier as fights both the VC and the men in his platoon.

3) Sometimes a sergeant yells at, belittles, and psychologically destroys my father, like in Full Metal Jacket. Sometimes my father is the sergeant.

4) Just like Tom Cruise as Ron Kovic in Born on the Fourth of July, my father’s post-traumatic stress kicks in when firecrackers explode. A baby cries. He and I share war stories.

5) My father pulls a Good Morning, Vietnam by infuriating his superiors: “failing in obedience.”

6) Every day is The Deer Hunter, playing Russian Roulette in fear of any triggers.

7) We Were Soldiers.

My first day

I've made plans and notes before this blog, but now it is time to officially get started. I am doing some work on the Psych of Poetics syllabus, Little House essay, and getting books on Leslie Scalapino. For Strike Out, I will use baseball and Vietnam War film poster mashups with blackout to creatre new mini-poems. I posted my DNA/barbed wire piece on facebook.

Next time:
Psych of Poetics syllabus: still need to scan PDFs, decide on course books, write syllabus on SLO

Little House: work on different sites. get reasearch

Begin "Beyond"

Ordered LS books

Art

I was thinking of instead of a triptic it could be comic book based or style piece of art. Or the flyer. Or the zine.

Announcement on Facebook

Fourth try and I made sabbatical! I hope to do Washburn proud. I am honored, grateful, and just plain feeling ecstatic. I am beginning with writing an essay about my Little House on the Border War Prairie investigation, alongside reading some of Leslie Scalapino's use of sci-fi film to write about poetic embodiment. Here I go!!!!!!!!!!

Change

I really want my sabbatical to be life-changing as I feel I learn something every semester I don't want that kind of feeling to be the only feeling I want something to truly change my life and that would mean going away or finding a new space

Why Poetry Matters (To First Genreation Students)

I am so happy to hear that my blog post was helpful for your Upward Bound course. Poetry can be such a struggle for students, but Transparent Assignment Design really helps them understand its importance.  I discovered Transparent Assignment Design through a workshop offered at Duquesne by our Center for Teaching Excellence; I am lucky to have such a great resource, and I am going to share your email with the director of the Center so that she can see the effects it has. I've also included a link to the TILT site at UNLV, which has a great deal of useful information and materials about Transparent Assignment Design:  https://www.unlv.edu/provost/transparency/tilt-higher-ed-examples-and-resources

Thanks again!
